A shipping document revealed on a Chinese Web site apparently points to iPad 3 units leaving China for U.S. airports.

The iPad 3 could already be jetting its way to the United States.

The shipping document revealed by Chinese forum site WeiPhone (English translation) allegedly details iPad 3 units hopping on board flights from China yesterday bound for airports in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City.

As translated by 9to5Mac, the report shows that initial deliveries from Apple supplier Foxconn to the U.S. will begin March 9. To no surprise, the shipments are said to be under tight security.

"In order to prevent the cargo from being dragged on the airport ramp for too long, as well as shortening the time the cargo stay on the airport ramp, we hereby require XXXX to schedule all the XXX cargo planes from Feb. 26 to Mar. 9. to XXX slot," according to a translation of the shipping document offered by a Chinese-speaking 9to5Mac reader.

But if true, it would mean the iPad 3 is likely to debut in March but not in early March as previous reports had suggested.As always, such information is to be taken with a heaping dollop of salt.

March 9 has been rumored by some sources as the date that Apple might launch its latest tablet. But if the initial shipments won't be delivered until that time, then we'd have to wait a bit longer for Apple's iPad 3 event.

Whenever the new tablet pops up, sources have told 9to5Mac that Apple could allow pre-orders. The company kicked off pre-orders for the first iPad but not for the iPad 2. The sources claim that pre-orders could start on March 7 or a few days later depending on available supplies.

More than a year after the Beatles came to iTunes, Apple’s digital store remains the only place you can legally download the band’s music. And now, if you want some Beatles but don’t want to pay for it, Apple can help you there, too: The company is giving away a free Beatles e-book.
“Yellow Submarine” is just what it sounds like — an illustrated version of the band’s 1968 movie, which is both trippy and kid-friendly (so British!). The book was first published in 2004, but the new version features interactive goodies like song samples and bits from the animated movie.
It’s a bunch of fun and will work on both iPads and iPhones, but you’re really better off enjoying this one on the former.
If you wanted to be churlish, you could note that the free book also serves as a promotion for a compilation album based on songs featured in the book.
Less churlish: Worth noting, yet again, that a year-plus exclusive is unheard of in digital music. Apple says it has sold 10 million songs and 1.8 million albums during that time; still love to know what they paid for that privilege.

The iPad 2 has some impres­sive mobile sil­i­con inside it. The A5 proces­sor is a dual-core affair with a 1GHZ clock speed, capa­ble of about 171 megaflops (or about 171 100 floating-point oper­a­tions per sec­ond).

Not bad, right? But how does the iPad 2 stack up against the most pow­er­ful com­put­er in the world, Fujit­su’s K Super Com­put­er?

Not too well, accord­ing to the guys at Royal Ping­dom. In fact, you would need about 61.5 mil­lion iPad 2s to match the 10 Bil­lion megaflops of the K Com­put­er.

That’s enough iPad 2s that if you stacked them on top of one anoth­er, the pile would be 540 kilo­me­ters high. That’s the equiv­a­lent of about 1,700 Eif­fel Tow­ers stacked end-to-end.

Well, sure. Fine. But can the K com­put­er run Infin­i­ty Blade 2? Thought not.

Hidden panorama mode

How To Enable The Hidden Panorama Camera Mode In iOS5

We recent­ly told you about the hid­den panora­ma mode in the iOS 5 Cam­era app that could be enabled by edit­ing a .plist file. Since then, a jail­break tweak called “Fire­break” has been released that auto­mat­i­cal­ly enables the fea­ture on any jail­bro­ken iOS 5 device.

Panora­ma mode in the iOS Cam­era actu­al­ly works, and you can get it on your own device right now with­out jail­break­ing.

A sim­ple hack has sur­faced that enables the hid­den panora­ma mode on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPod touch, and iPad 2 run­ning iOS 5. To enable the fea­ture, you’ll need to per­form a mod­i­fied back­up of your iOS device in iTunes. You will also need to restore from a new back­up, so keep that in mind before con­tin­u­ing.

Step 1: Down­load the free trial of iBack­up­Bot for Mac OS X or Win­dows. Install it on your com­put­er.

Step 2: Back­up your iOS device in iTunes. If you have a recent back­up, then you can use that file. You have to man­u­al­ly back­up instead of using iCloud.

Step 3: Once you’ve got a back­up you’re ready to restore to, open iBack­up­Bot. Nav­i­gate to Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist and open that file. If you’re run­ning the trial ver­sion of iBack­up­Bot, just click can­cel after the warn­ing mes­sage and con­tin­ue.

Step 4: Add EnableFirebreak right below DiskSpaceWasLow and click the disk icon to save your edit.

Step 5: Exit out of iBack­up­Bot and restore your iOS device in iTunes to the recent back­up file you just edit­ed.

That’s it! You should now have the iOS 5 panora­ma mode enabled on your iOS device — no jail­break required. When you launch the Cam­era app, the panora­ma mode should be avail­able in Options under Grid and HDR mode.

There are plen­ty of other apps in the App Store that let you take panoram­ic pic­tures, but this method enables the native panora­ma mode that Apple has dis­abled by default in iOS 5. While the fea­ture is usable, it’s obvi­ous­ly not ready for prime time, so don’t be sur­prised if you run into some bugs.

The CIA is watch­ing over social media, accord­ing to a new arti­cle from the AP which reveals that the US gov­ern­ment pours over 5 mil­lion tweets sent on Twit­ter every day.

Given the rise of social media across the world, news that US intel­li­gence agen­cies are tap­ping into the medi­um to stay informed of con­ver­sa­tions across the world is not unex­pect­ed although their use of the con­tent may sur­prise you.

With more than 800 mil­lion using Face­book and Twit­ter see­ing more than 400 mil­lion tweets sent across its ser­vice, the CIA’s sur­veil­lance team has a lot of noise to short through to gar­ner use­ful infor­ma­tion.

The AP fea­ture explains how the staff at its Open Source Cen­ter, referred to as the “venge­ful librar­i­ans” by its team, sorts through the clut­ter of cyber­space to build intel­li­gence reports that analyse inter­na­tion­al opin­ion and respons­es to US activ­i­ties.

From Ara­bic to Man­darin Chi­nese, from an angry tweet to a thought­ful blog, the ana­lysts gath­er the infor­ma­tion, often in native tongue. They cross-reference it with the local news­pa­per or a clan­des­tine­ly inter­cept­ed phone con­ver­sa­tion. From there, they build a pic­ture sought by the high­est lev­els at the White House.

The sys­tem appar­ent­ly enabled the agency to fore­see the Egypt­ian upris­ing although it was unable to pre­dict exact­ly when it would hit, Doug Naquin, the cen­ter’s direc­tor, told AP in what the news wire says is the first ever media visit to the oper­a­tions.

A exam­ple of the work that the cen­tre car­ries out came when the US killed Osama Bin Laden ear­li­er this year, when the CIA turned to social media to build a report that gave the White House a snap­shot of the world’s opin­ion on the inci­dent.

Since tweets can’t nec­es­sar­i­ly be pegged to a geo­graph­ic loca­tion, the ana­lysts broke down reac­tion by lan­guages. The result: The major­i­ty of Urdu tweets, the lan­guage of Pak­istan, and Chi­nese tweets, were neg­a­tive. China is a close ally of Pak­istan’s. Pak­istani offi­cials protest­ed the raid as an affront to their nation’s sov­er­eign­ty, a sore point that con­tin­ues to com­pli­cate U.S.-Pak­istani rela­tions.

When the pres­i­dent gave his speech address­ing Mideast issues a few weeks after the raid, the tweet response over the next 24 hours came in neg­a­tive from Turkey, Egypt, Yemen, Alge­ria, the Per­sian Gulf and Israel, too, with speak­ers of Ara­bic and Tur­kic tweets charg­ing that Obama favored Israel, and Hebrew tweets denounc­ing the speech as pro-Arab.

So the next time you care to pass com­ment on US for­eign pol­i­cy, Pres­i­dent Obama or the tasty sand­which you just ate, the CIA and Pres­i­dent Obama might be lis­ten­ing.

Rumors that Apple will be building an actual TV set, not just a settop box, have been building for months. It was reported earlier that Apple had invested in manufacturing facilities in Asia in order to secure a supply of displays up to 50 inches. And some wonder whether Apple's new data center in North Carolina is intended to stream movies and TV shows — to essentially be an alternative to cable TV.
It seems like a reasonable move. Everything suggests that the delivery of TV is moving to the Internet, and someone will eventually figure out how it will all work together, integrating movies, broadcast TV, the Internet, and one's personal content in the cloud. Who better to figure that out than Steve Jobs?

Siri on any IOS device????

Siri is one of the iPhone 4S’ biggest sell­ing points, and I think any­one who’s had chance to try out the fea­ture would agree that’s it’s pret­ty excep­tion­al. For the time being, it’s exclu­sive to Apple’s lat­est iPhone, but one hack­er claims to have it run­ning on any device run­ning iOS 5, and says a jail­bro­ken device is not nec­es­sary.


An iPhone devel­op­er that goes by the name of Jack­o­plane announced today that he has suc­cess­ful­ly port­ed Siri to other iOS 5 devices, and got­ten it to com­mu­ni­cate with Apple’s servers with­out any issues. It means that all iOS 5 devices are capa­ble of run­ning Siri — you just need to install it.

So when can you get it? Well, accord­ing to Jack­o­plane, he’s not sure yet, and does note in mes­sages post­ed to Twit­ter that “the hard­est part is still ahead.”

It’s unclear at this point how Jack­o­plane has got­ten Siri to work on other devices, or when the soft­ware will be avail­able. How­ev­er, I have a feel­ing that Apple will put a stop to this soon after its release by block­ing any device that isn’t an iPhone 4S from its servers.

Still, this is promis­ing news for those with­out an iPhone 4S, and those who would like to use Siri on their iPod touch and iPad. Would you like to see Siri on older devices?

Magical Weather

Magical Weather ($0.99) by Sophiestication Software shows you the day’s weather with a beautiful interface.
Look at the weekly weather forecast for any city you want. In addition to your local weather, you can add eight others. Each city entered will show a thumbnail on the main page, with the current temperature and a picturesque background showing the weather.

The app provides a wealth of information once you select the city’s thumbnail. Weather information, such as the current temperature, the day’s high and low, seven-day forecast, chance of rain, and more are all available. Icons for the seven-day forecast give you a quick idea of what to expect for the week.
All of this is presented against one of sixteen beautiful weather backgrounds. One of the night ones is especially gorgeous, with fluffy dark clouds floating past twinkling stars.
What’s even better is that if you’re not sure what the other symbols next to the measurements mean, a help button on the bottom left of the screen can show you. Tags with lines will highlight what each symbol represents.
A second column of information is available as well, though you can choose to hide it if you’d like. This column shows the day in hourly increments, along with temperature and chance of rain. A red arrow indicates where you are on the timeline.
The settings menu gives you the option of choosing which measurement you would like the temperature and wind speed to show as. By default, it’s set as Fahrenheit and mph.
The interface is beautiful, though overall it feels like it could use some more functionality. Perhaps push notifications would help, especially taking advantage of iOS 5’s Notification Center.
While the weather animations are great to look at, it’s a shame that it goes away when the iPad goes to sleep. Furthermore, I think the main feature I look for in a weather app is a Doppler radar. Seeing the cloud cover puts the current weather into a better perspective for my liking. I would turn to apps like WeatherBug before this one, despite the lack of animated backgrounds.
However, that’s not to say that Magical Weather isn’t useful. It certainly does provide a good snapshot of the weather in a eye-pleasing interface.

200 hundred improvements to IOS 5

Earlier today, but later than the midnight release time, Apple released the much anticipated iOS 5.

Admittedly, this will disappoint JailBreak fans, hackers and whatnot, as none of the jailbreaking tools, toys and tweaks will work on iOS 5, and iOS 4.3.5 is still a tethered solution.

That being said, this could possibly put a dent in the jailbreaking market due to some of the new features.

One feature in particular, which is the ability for any and all future upgrades to be done OTA (over the air), may also give Apple a piece of the android market share back. iOS 5 also boasts the fact that a computer is no longer needed for initial setup, as it too is done OTA.

iOS 5 brings a number of new features to iDevices. They include enhanced notifications, iMessage (an iDevice messaging platform that will work between iDevices, only, wireless iTunes syncing, iCloud, Twitter integration, Newsstand, a new Reminders app, improved camera and photo support, and a lot more.

Once iTunes was upgraded, the pop up notification came up with the iOS 5 download choices. On a windows 7 desktop, the upgrade (including backups, etc) took about 45 minutes. After going through the acceptance of the license agreements, it brought up the list of changes, which was impressive.

It made mention of much more than the few features written 2 paragraphs prior, including (but not limited to;

Steve Jobs, Founder and Visionary of Apple, Has Passed Away

This is a sad day. Former CEO and the co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, has passed away at age 56.

In August, Steve stepped down from his CEO position at Apple. “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Steve has had a history of health and liver issues.

Confirming the loss, Apple has posted the following message:



Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could build, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
It is undoubtedly true that Steve Jobs has completely revolutionized a multitude of industries, changing the world in the process. If it was not for Steve Jobs, then we would not have modern technology. He has influenced more than just technology during his 35 years in the industry. His visions and achievements have affected almost every single person in existence today and will continue to do so. Steve’s passing is an extremely sad and significant loss.

In retrospect, it shouldn't be a surprise that Apple released a half-step iPhone this week, instead of a revolutionary and redesigned iPhone 5. Think about it--the real reason for the iPhone 4S is the same as for the iPhone 3GS: carrier contracts are two years long.
The 4S isn't meant to be an upgrade for iPhone 4 users--it's a lure to get new iPhone users in the door, and you iPhone 4 folks will get your iPhone 5 upgrade just in time for a new contract. And if you decide you can't wait and spend big bucks to break your contract or buy the iPhone 4S at full price...well, that was your choice, wasn't it?

Is the most amazing iPhone yet good enough?

Look back at Apple's iPhone release history and you'll see that the iPhone 4S is just the next step in the product evolution, which went from 3G to 3GS to 4, and now to 4S. It actually makes perfect sense, once the lust for new technology and new Apple hardware starts to subside. If anything, Apple is playing a very clever shell game with carrier contracts that allows it to grab new buyers every year instead of every two years.
I polled my Twitter brigade after the announcement, asking them whether the iPhone 4 users in the audience would upgrade to the iPhone 4S. The vast majority of iPhone 4 users said no, and the main reason they cited was their contracts. Examples:
@mollywood No way. Vain nerds (me) don't care about behind the scenes improvements, and siri isn't cool enough to warrant contract breakage.
@mollywood I won't. I still have 1 year on my contract, so I'll wait for the next iPhone to "wow" me. The 4GS isn't impressive, IMO.
@mollywood it's a no for me Molly. I didn't upgrade from 3G to 3GS for the same reason - nothing to justify the ETF [early termination fee]
That was a pretty standard set of responses from the iPhone 4 set and no surprise, really. (A few said they'd get it no matter what, out of sheer Apple love, but that's to be expected.) On the other hand, here are some responses from 3G owners:

Think about the staggering for a second here and you'll see it's a pretty smart strategy on Apple's part. iPhone 3G owners on contract could skip the 3GS and get a meaty upgrade in the iPhone 4, while iPhone 3GS owners can feel great about jumping all the way up to the Siri-enabled iPhone 4S. Meanwhile, iPhone 4 owners get most of the features of iOS 5, minus Siri, and can pay a nice fat premium if they really, really want it. Either way, Apple sells iPhones year after year after year.
Sure, the iConsumer is being played, but the rage is less than what it would be if the forced upgrade march--an inevitability with Apple and all other consumer tech--was moving at a faster clip than the carrier contracts.

Apple has announced its next iPhone and it won't be called the iPhone 5, but rather the iPhone 4S.
From the outside, the iPhone 4S looks just like the iPhone 4 -- which may disappoint some hoping for a new form factor.
On the inside however, the iPhone 4S is a new device, said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
Most notably, perhaps, is the addition of Apple's dual-core A5 chip, which is built by Samsung.
The A5 in the iPhone 4S will offer seven-times faster graphics for better mobile gameplay and is "up to" twice as fast overall as the A4 chip in the iPhone 4, Schiller said.

The iPhone 4S battery life will also be the best of any iPhone thus far, with eight hours of talk time and 40 hours of music listening capability.
The iPhone 4S has a new wireless system that can "intelligently switch" between its two antennas to "make even better call quality," Schiller said.
So what does that mean exactly? Apple is promising that users will be able to download data much faster than before using HSDPA cellular technology. The iPhone 4S won't be a 4G phone, but it will have 4G-like download speeds and send and receive data a lot faster.
As expected, the iPhone 4S will also have an upgraded camera -- 8-megapixels -- capable of shooting images at a resolution of 3,264x2,448 pixels. That's 60% more pixels than the iPhone 4's 5-megapixel camera.
Apple said the 4S' sensor is much better too with a "five element lens." Schiller said: "Here we've really gone overboard," with an f/2.4 aperture which will improve photo quality in low light situations.
Schiller even said the iPhone 4S takes photos a lot faster than its rivals too. The Droid Bionic takes 3.7 seconds to take a pic, Schiller said, while the iPhone 4S takes just 1.1 seconds.
The camera will shoot better video too -- at a high-definition resolution of 1080p.
Apple has yet to say just how much the iPhone 4S will cost, on what carriers it will be available or when it will be released.

You make the card, Apple does the rest, printing it out on 100% cotton paper. There’s over 21 different designs in 6 different categories: including birthdays, birth announcements, love, travel.

10:24 a.m. Apple has paid more than $3 billion to app developers

10:23 a.m. The app store is the number one store for mobile apps. In a little over three years, customers have downloaded over 18 billion apps. And that rate is accelerating: 1 billion apps are being downloaded each month.

10:22 a.m. So Apple has sold 250 million iOS devices. iOS has 43% of the mobile market. Android has 33%, according to their pie chart. iOS makes up over 60% of the mobile browsing market. There are over 500,000 apps in the app store, including over 140,000 iPad-specific apps.

10:22 a.m. Scott Forstall is taking the stage to talk to us about iOS.

10:22 a.m. This morning they passed the quarter of a billion sales mark for iOS devices.

10:21 a.m. Consumers don’t want tablets, they want iPads, Tim quotes from AllThingsD.

10:20 a.m. 92% of Fortune 500 companies are testing or deploying iPad. This is in less than 18 months, which is unheard of. “iPad is the undisputed top selling tablet in the world,” Tim says. “Despite everybody and their brother trying to compete with iPad, 3 out 4 tablets in the US are iPads.”

10:20 a.m. Over 80 percent of top hospitals in U.S. are now testing or piloting iPad.

10:18 a.m. Next up, the iPad. People have been thrilled with both the original iPad, and the iPad 2, he says. 95% satisfaction score in their most recent survey. And iPads are showing up everywhere: in schools (cute picture of a girl in a science lab holding an iPad). Almost a thousand K-12 schools have a 1:1 program so a child can enjoy an iPad for an entire day. Almost all school districts have an iPad program. iPads are in universities, flight cockpits. It makes the pilot and plane more efficient (fuel efficiency).

10:17 a.m. The iPhone has 5 percent share of the worldwide mobile phone market. That’s one in 20 people, worldwide. The market is 1.5 billion units annually.

10:15 a.m. The iPhone 4 makes up over half of the total iPhones sold since the iPhone was first introduced. It’s become the number one smartphone in the world. Year over year growth is at 125%

10:14 a.m. Now iTunes. It started with 200,000 songs, they’ve now got 20 million songs, or ten times that. It is the number one music store in the world. Over 16 billion songs have been downloaded from the iTunes store. Wow!

10:13 a.m. iPod is still a large and important product for Apple, Tim says. They’ve sold 45 million in the last year ending in June. Almost half of those are going to people buying their first iPod. “It remains a very important business for us.”

10:12 a.m. Next up, music: iTunes and iPod. It was only 10 years ago that the iPod launched, revolutionizing the way we listen to music, and the whole music industry. Tim says it also reminded us all that we love music, making music a more integral part of lives. iPod became the number one music player in the world, it’s market share has been above 70 percent for a long time. Apple has cumulatively sold over 300 million iPods around the world. It took Sony 30 years to sell 220,000 Walkman cassette players.

10:11 a.m. Apple’s Mac market share is now 23%, so nearly 1 out of every 4 computers sold in the US is a Mac.

10:10 a.m. The Mac has outgrown the PC market by almost 6 times in the past year. Every single quarter for 5 years the Mac has outgrown the PC market. They are now approaching 60 million users (58 million right now).

10:10 a.m. Macbook Air and iMac are #1 notebook and desktop in the U.S.

10:08 a.m. Tim is going to walk us through each of Apple’s major areas with an update. First is the Mac with OS X Lion — “It’s the best computer operating system out there,” Mossberg is quoted as saying. Results have been staggering: over 6 million downloads. This is 80% more than Snow Leopard.

10:07 a.m. Tim says Apple now has six stores in China, bringing Apple to 357 total stores in 11 countries.

10:05 a.m. The Hong Kong store offers a view of Victoria harbor. It has an even crazier glass staircase. They sold more Macs on opening day in this store than on any other store in the world, it was one of their best opening days in retail history.

10:04 a.m. Tim is showing us beautiful pics of the stores, one of a glass staircase. They welcomed 100,000 visitors their opening weekend.

10:04 a.m. A few updates: Just last weekend, Apple opened two new stores in China, one in Hong Kong and one in Shanghai.



10:04 a.m. — Today, Apple wants to remind us of the uniqueness of their company as they announce innovations of their mobile operating system, applications and hardware, and integrating them into a single experience.

10:02 a.m. — Tim Cook has taken the stage. This is his first product launch since being named CEO. He says it’s a pleasure to host us today, and he loves Apple. He says that this campus serves as a second home for many Apple employees. The room we’re in is called Town Hall. Nice pleasantries and introductory remarks.

9:56 a.m. — Apple seems to be a big fan of the classic rock.



9:50 a.m. — We’re in and seated, people are still getting settled. We’re listening to some classic Led Zeppelin.



9:32 a.m. — Sadly, the bathrooms are not as cool as I had hoped. Pretty standard, utilitarian. Top marks for cleanliness, however. Rating: A+

Daily Tip: How to share iPhone and iPad apps you like via the App Store

Apple has posted a short tip on how to share the iPad and iPhone apps you like right from the iTunes App Store page. If you click or tap an App Store link here at TiPb, or are simply browsing and come across something you know will interest a friend or special someone, it’s great to be able to send it them via email. Here’s how.

Whether you shop on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use Tell a Friend and Gift This App to share your enthusiasm with friends. On an app’s page in the App Store on the computer, click the downward pointing triangle next to the Buy App or Free App button to see the options–Tell a Friend, which lets you send an email link, and Gift this App, which lets you buy the app for someone else. On the iPhone and iPod touch, scroll down to the bottom of an app’s page to find the buttons for those options. On the iPad, use the links on the upper right of an app’s page. In all cases, you’ll be asked to sign in with your Apple ID if you haven’t already, before you complete your intended action.
